THE REAL WORK
Interview clients, review documents, apply tax rules, prepare accurate returns, protect sensitive information and explain next steps. Accuracy and ethical conduct matter more than speed.
Learn federal and relevant state tax rules. A paid federal return preparer generally needs an IRS PTIN. An EFIN is required for firms that originate electronic returns, not every preparer working for one. Check state requirements, choose approved software, and build secure workflows.
Tax season can be demanding: deadlines, changing rules, difficult client questions, recordkeeping, identity verification and quality review. Year-round opportunities include planning, bookkeeping and business support when qualified.
Start as a trained team member, build experience, then consider an independent practice, a multi-preparer firm or service bureau. Growth requires marketing, client trust, operations, compliance and financial discipline.
